How Your Diet Affects Your Skin

Eating healthy is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy well-being and an active lifestyle. But have you ever really thought about how your food choices can impact your skin?

The truth is, food can have just as much of an impact on the condition of your skin as it has on your weight, mood, and overall health. Our bodies can react to different ingredients through numerous ways. For example, some foods may trigger breakouts, while other foods high in sugar and starch can lead to problem skin. For many, dairy can lead to skin inflammation, while for others alcohol could be a leading culprit – as it dehydrates your skin and eliminates much of its natural moisture.

While everyone’s skin is different, there are many foods that are proven to help improve your skin’s health in more ways than one. Surprisingly enough, chocolate is one of them. Dark chocolate, especially, works to increase blood flow and create a brightening, luminous effect. Drinking coffee has also been proven to contribute to healthy skin and decrease the risk of melanoma. Like anything else, however, it should be enjoyed in moderation – consuming too much caffeine can counteract the benefits it has on your skin.

Much like dark chocolate and coffee, fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants – these are essentially responsible for eliminating the ‘bad stuff” -i.e. toxins that can be damaging to our cells. In turn, these antioxidants give our bodies that extra boost – and serve to keep the skin consistently youthful and refreshed. Different antioxidants can include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Carotenoids, for example, can be found in many orange and red colored foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. These antioxidants help to add yellow tones to your skin, brightening it and making it appear more healthy and lively.

As a rule of thumb, eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day – and choose the brightest ones, which are typically the most antioxidant-rich. Opt for the darkest greens – such as kale and spinach. Vegetables also happen to be rich in fiber, carbohydrates and water – and all of these are essential towards promoting healthy skin.

Foods that contain healthy fats – such as avocados, salmon, almonds, eggs, and olive oil – can strengthen skin elasticity and prevent wrinkles. Drinking green tea also helps to remove those harmful toxins and delay skin aging. As you seek foods that are rich in these key nutrients, you must continue to maintain a well-balanced diet. This means getting your daily intake of fiber, protein, and carbohydrates.
